Turmeric, Curcumin & Black Pepper: Why the Right Combination Matters?

Turmeric, Curcumin & Black Pepper: Why the Right Combination Matters?

Turmeric has always been more than just a spice in Indian kitchens. It has been part of our food, our traditions and the everyday meals we have grown up with.

But when we started looking deeper into turmeric, it isn't simply about how much turmeric we consume. It is also about understanding what turmeric contains, how its compounds are absorbed, and why the ingredients we combine with it can matter.

That thinking became one of the ideas behind Curcumeal.

It Starts With the Turmeric

At Geethas, we believe that the quality of a product should begin long before it reaches the bottle. Our turmeric journey starts with carefully sourced turmeric, because the ingredient at the heart of a turmeric-based product matters. We pay attention to the quality of the turmeric and how it moves from the field into our production process.

From the turmeric we source to the ingredients we bring together, Curcumeal was created with a simple thought, make turmeric a meaningful part of everyday food, while being mindful of how its natural compounds are absorbed by the body. And this brings us to curcumin.

So, What Exactly Is Curcumin?

Turmeric contains several naturally occurring compounds called curcuminoids, of which curcumin is one of the best known. Curcumin contributes to turmeric's characteristic yellow colour and has been the subject of extensive scientific research.

This is why you may often hear people talk about the curcumin content of turmeric rather than turmeric alone. But there is an important point that often gets overlooked. Consuming turmeric and absorbing its curcumin are not quite the same thing.

Is Taking Turmeric Alone Enough?

Turmeric naturally contains curcumin, but curcumin has relatively low bioavailability when consumed on its own. In simple words, bioavailability refers to the amount of a substance that is absorbed and becomes available for the body to use.

So, simply consuming turmeric doesn't automatically mean that all the curcumin present in it will be absorbed by the body. This is where the idea of absorption becomes important.

The Bioavailability Question

Curcumin has been widely studied, but one of the challenges researchers have identified is its poor absorption when taken by itself.

This has led to considerable interest in ways of improving the bioavailability of curcumin. And one of the most studied and familiar combinations in this conversation is something that has been sitting in our kitchens for generations, Black pepper.

Why Black Pepper and Turmeric?

Black pepper contains a naturally occurring compound called piperine. Research has shown that piperine can increase the bioavailability of curcumin. This combination has therefore become an important area of interest when discussing turmeric, curcumin and absorption.

It's a simple idea, but an interesting one, Turmeric contains curcumin. Black pepper contains piperine. Together, they form a combination that can support greater curcumin bioavailability.

This doesn't mean that adding a little black pepper makes turmeric magically work better. Rather, it is about understanding the science behind the ingredients and how they can complement each other.

This Is Where Curcumeal Comes In

When we thought about creating Curcumeal, we didn't want to stop at simply putting turmeric into another product. The thought was to bring together ingredients thoughtfully, while considering how the body interacts with them.

Curcumeal combines pure turmeric with fruits, nuts and black pepper, bringing together ingredients chosen to make turmeric easy to include in an everyday food routine.

The inclusion of black pepper is not just about flavour. It is part of the formulation's thinking around curcumin bioavailability and absorption. Because for us, creating a turmeric product isn't only about adding turmeric.

It is about asking better questions:

Where does the turmeric come from?
What does it contain?
How does the body absorb it?
And how can the ingredients work together meaningfully?

That is the thought behind Curcumeal.

From Turmeric to Thoughtful Nutrition

Turmeric has been part of our lives for generations. Modern research is helping us understand more about the compounds within it, including curcumin, and the factors that influence how our body absorbs them.

At Geethas, we see value in bringing these two worlds together, the familiarity of an ingredient we have known for generations and a deeper understanding of the science behind it.

Curcumeal was created from that very thought. Not simply to add turmeric to your routine, but to bring together turmeric, fruits, nuts and black pepper in a thoughtfully made food product, with the relationship between curcumin and piperine in mind. Because sometimes, it's not just about what you put in. It's about understanding how everything comes together.
